Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery

Largest American military cemetery in Europe, north of Verdun

The cemetery at Romagne-sous-Montfaucon spreads across 53 hectares with 14,246 marble crosses and stars of David in long, precise rows. A central memorial chapel, in restrained American classical style, houses the names of a further 954 missing.

The setting is calm and well-tended; the American Battle Monuments Commission staff are on hand to help locate specific graves. Combined with the Montfaucon Monument a few kilometres south, it makes a substantial half day. About 45 minutes from Verdun by road.

A story
The cemetery holds 14,246 American war dead — the largest American military cemetery in Europe — from the Meuse-Argonne Offensive of September–November 1918. Among them are the bodies of three Medal of Honor recipients; the remains of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington were chosen from one of four candidates exhumed here in 1921.
