Haute Ville (Old Town)

The Haute Ville is the walled old town of Boulogne, perched on a hill above the port and the modern city. Its 13th-century ramparts are among the best-preserved in France — the full circuit of about two kilometres can be walked on the top of the walls, giving elevated views over the harbour, the Channel, and the rooftops below. The compact interior contains the basilica, the belfry, the château-musée, cobbled streets, and a population of actual residents rather than souvenir shops, which gives it an authentic feel rare in tourist-historic centres of this kind.
