The DUNKERQUE 1940 Museum provides the most comprehensive account of Operation Dynamo available anywhere. Spread over two floors of a purpose-built space near the town beach, it combines military vehicles, weapons, uniforms, and personal effects with film footage, maps, and extensive explanatory panels.
The museum is honest about the full picture — the French contribution to the defence, the chaos of the beaches, the political decisions made in London and Paris — rather than presenting a simple heroic narrative. A reconstructed section of the defensive perimeter gives a sense of the conditions for soldiers holding the line. The collection of small personal objects — letters, identity documents, improvised equipment — is particularly affecting. Plan at least two hours. Signs are in French and English.
