Eating Out

Bayeux eats well for a town of its size. Norman cooking is rich and unapologetic — cream, butter, Calvados (apple brandy), and Camembert feature heavily, and the cider is excellent. The old town around the cathedral has a good concentration of restaurants.

Le Pommier on Rue des Cuisiniers is the most consistently recommended restaurant in town, serving Norman classics — sole, duck with Calvados, andouille sausage — in a half-timbered room. Restaurant La Rapière (59 Rue St-Jean) offers a reliable prix-fixe menu with regional dishes. For a more casual meal, the market held every Saturday morning on the Place Saint-Patrice is the place to buy local cheese, cider, and charcuterie. The nearby town of Isigny-sur-Mer is the source of the best Normandy cream and butter, and its products are found in every good kitchen in the region.
