La Cambe German War Cemetery

Sombre German military cemetery west of Bayeux, with more than 21,000 Second World War graves

La Cambe is the German counterpart to the Allied cemeteries around Bayeux and the D-Day beaches. Its mood is deliberately different: dark stone crosses, low plaques, and a central mound topped by a stark black cross. More than 21,000 German soldiers are buried here, many of them very young, and the place makes the Normandy campaign feel less like a clean military map and more like a human catastrophe.

It is about 25 km west of Bayeux, so treat it as a battlefield excursion rather than a quick town-centre stop. It pairs naturally with Omaha Beach, the American cemetery, and the wider western landing beaches, especially if you want the day to include more than one national memory of 1944.
