The most atmospheric street in Dinan is also its most physically demanding. Rue du Jerzual drops from the upper town through the medieval gate of Porte du Jerzual and continues down as Rue Petit Fort all the way to the port — a descent of about 40 metres in 400 metres of cobbled, winding lane.
The buildings lining the street date from the 15th to 17th centuries and lean out over the road in the style typical of medieval Breton construction. Many now house artists' studios, craft workshops, and small galleries. Walking down in the morning when the light hits the stone facades is one of the better experiences Dinan offers. The walk back up is harder, but the cafes in the upper town make a good reward.
