Maisons Satie

Eccentric audio-visual museum in the composer's childhood home

Address 67 Boulevard Charles V

A deliberately strange museum in the half-timbered house where Erik Satie spent his childhood. Rather than a conventional biographical display, the visit is a sound-and-image walk: visitors wear headphones that guide them from room to room through floating pears, winged chairs, and self-playing pianos, soundtracked by Satie's music and surrealist narration.

It will divide your travelling companions — some will find it captivating, others tiresome. Allow about an hour. Closed Tuesdays.

A story
Satie was thrown out of the Paris Conservatoire for being 'the laziest student in the place' before becoming the composer of the Gymnopédies. The museum doesn't try to fix his image — it leans into the surrealism.
