La Petite Alsace

Courtyard of half-timbered Alsatian-style houses built as early social housing

Tucked off the Rue Daviel, La Petite Alsace is a courtyard of forty timber-framed houses built in 1912 in a deliberately Alsatian style, one of the first experiments in garden-suburb social housing in Paris. The gabled, half-timbered façades around a shared green court look transplanted from a Strasbourg village and are completely unexpected this deep in the 13th.

It is a private residential enclave, so admire it from the gateway rather than wandering in. Together with the little maisonnette-lined Rue Daviel opposite, it makes a charming two-minute detour while exploring the Butte-aux-Cailles.
