La Conciergerie is the medieval palace and prison on Ile de la Cite, best known as the place where Marie Antoinette was held before her execution in 1793. The surviving halls give a strong sense of royal Paris before the Louvre became the main palace, and the revolutionary history makes it a useful companion to nearby Sainte-Chapelle.
