Les Deux Magots faces Café de Flore across Place Saint-Germain-des-Prés, and the two cafes have been in friendly rivalry for over a century. Both were frequented by Hemingway, Sartre, and de Beauvoir; both serve the same excellent coffee at the same steep prices; both fill with tourists in summer and fill with locals in winter.
The Deux Magots has the better terrace — facing the square and the Romanesque church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés — and the slightly more famous literary heritage. It gives its name to a prestigious annual literary prize awarded each January. The choice between Flore and Magots is largely a matter of which terrace you prefer.
