Saturday Market

Every Saturday morning the Boulevard des Lices, the main tree-lined avenue of Arles, becomes one of the best outdoor markets in Provence. Stalls stretch for several hundred metres selling olives, lavender honey, charcuterie, herbs de Provence, fabric, and pottery — the full Provencal range, and much of it genuinely local rather than tourist imports.

Arrive before 10am to see it at its most active, when locals are shopping rather than photographing. The market wraps up by midday. A smaller Wednesday market covers the same ground. The Boulevard des Lices is pleasant for a café afterwards — there are several good options at the eastern end near the Roman arena.
