Day Trips

The Camargue begins immediately south of Arles — a vast wetland of flamingos, wild white horses, and black bulls. Cycling is the best way to explore the flat marshland; bikes can be hired in Arles. Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, the Camargue's main town, is about 40 kilometres away.

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is 25 kilometres northeast. Van Gogh painted Starry Night from the asylum here, and the excavated Roman city of Glanum is on the edge of town. Les Baux-de-Provence, a ruined hilltop citadel with sweeping views over the Alpilles, is 20 kilometres east and can be combined with Saint-Rémy in a full day.
