Getting There

Avignon sits on the Rhône in the south of France, roughly equidistant between Lyon and Marseille. It is well connected by rail and reasonably accessible by road.

By train: The TGV from Paris Gare de Lyon takes around 2h40 and stops at Avignon TGV station, a short tram or taxi ride from the old town. A second station, Avignon Centre, handles slower regional trains and is a short walk inside the walls. From Marseille the journey is under an hour.

By car: Avignon lies on the A7 autoroute (the old Route Nationale 7) which runs from Lyon south towards Aix and Marseille. From Paris, allow around six hours. Avoid driving south in late July and August when the autoroute becomes a slow-moving queue.

By plane: Avignon-Provence Airport, a few kilometres southeast of the city, handles seasonal flights from the UK and domestic connections via Paris. Marseille Provence Airport is the practical alternative for more options, with regular train connections to Avignon taking around 60–90 minutes.
