Samsari is the second-highest peak of the Javakheti plateau, rising 3,285 metres over the Samsari Range north of Akhalkalaki. The walk up the southern flank is gentler than Didi Abuli — long, but on grass rather than scree — and rewards you with a crescent crater rim and a small alpine lake nestled below.
The mountain forms part of the Javakheti National Park, set up to protect the steppe, the wetlands, and the migration corridor that runs through these highlands. In summer the slopes are covered in wildflowers and the meadows are dotted with shepherds' camps; in winter the whole massif is buried in snow and effectively inaccessible. The trailhead is most easily reached from the village of Tambovka, around forty minutes by car from Akhalkalaki.
