Mount Kazbek

At 5,047 metres, Kazbek is one of the highest peaks in the Greater Caucasus and one of Georgia's most iconic mountains. It is a dormant stratovolcano and its upper slopes are permanently glaciated. The standard route to the summit is technically a non-technical climb — no ropes required in good conditions — but the altitude, weather, and crevassed glaciers make it a serious undertaking. Most climbers take two to three days, spending a night at the Betlemi Hut (3,650 m) before a summit push.

The mountain is visible from all over the Stepantsminda valley and dominates every view from the Gergeti Trinity Church. For non-climbers, the ascent to the Meteo Station at around 3,600 metres makes a demanding but achievable day hike with extraordinary views. Guides and equipment rental are available in the village.
