Juta Valley

The Juta Valley opens to the southwest of Stepantsminda and offers some of the finest high-altitude trekking in the region. A rough road leads to the small village of Juta at 2,150 metres, where the valley proper begins. From there, trails climb toward the Chaukhi massif — a jagged wall of rock towers that looks almost Alpine — and the Chaukhi Pass at around 3,350 metres connects to the Gudauri area for a multi-day traverse.

The valley is far quieter than the Truso route or the path to Gergeti Trinity Church. In midsummer the meadows are full of wildflowers and the streams run fast with snowmelt. Independent hikers can camp in the valley; for the higher routes, a local guide is sensible given the terrain and the speed with which weather can change in the Greater Caucasus.
