Jokolo

Jokolo sits about a kilometre upstream from Duisi and is the second of the three main Kist villages in the gorge. It is smaller and quieter, with a noticeably more traditional feel — fewer cars, more donkey traffic, and old wooden balconies in better repair than further down the valley. A handful of families take guests, and the food is the same Kist-Georgian mix of khinkali, walnut sauces, and grilled lamb.

The walk from Duisi to Jokolo and on to Birkiani makes a good half-day on foot, with the Alazani on one side and the orchards and small fields of the Kist farmers on the other. Stop for tea in any of the villages; the welcome is generally warm and your host will likely know whose mother is at home next door.
