The weekly Sufi zikr — a devotional chant and movement ceremony — is one of the most distinctive cultural experiences in Georgia. Pankisi's Kist community keeps both a male Naqshbandi brotherhood, which gathers in the Duisi mosque on Thursday evenings, and a separate women's brotherhood that meets in a private house and chants standing in a tight circle. Women's zikr ceremonies of this kind have largely vanished elsewhere in the Muslim world; Pankisi is one of the few places where the tradition continues.
Visitors are welcome at both — quietly, modestly dressed, and ideally introduced by a guesthouse host who knows the participants. The chanting is hypnotic and physical; a session typically lasts an hour. There is no charge, but a small contribution to the host household is appropriate. Schedules shift around the Muslim calendar so check with your guesthouse on arrival rather than relying on a fixed timetable.
