The State Museum of Natural History at Erbprinzenstraße 13 is one of the two state natural history museums of Baden-Württemberg, holding collections covering geology, palaeontology, mineralogy, botany, and zoology. The museum's strength lies in its regional focus: the geology and prehistoric life of the Upper Rhine Valley, the Black Forest ecosystem, and the flora and fauna of Baden-Württemberg.
The palaeontology section is the most visited, with fossil collections from the Jurassic limestone of southern Germany — ichthyosaur skeletons, ammonites, and marine reptiles that lived in the shallow sea that once covered this part of Europe. The museum is well-suited for families and is less crowded than the more famous natural history museums in Stuttgart or Berlin. Entry is moderately priced; check for reduced admission on Sundays.
