Ludwigsburger Porzellan

Ludwigsburger Porzellan-Manufaktur, founded in 1758 by Duke Carl Eugen, is one of the oldest continuously operating porcelain factories in Germany. The factory still produces hand-painted figurines and tableware using techniques that have changed remarkably little in 260 years. A small museum at the factory traces the evolution of forms and decorations, from rococo court pieces to contemporary collaborations with designers.

The factory shop is the practical reason to visit — pieces are seriously expensive but the workmanship is visible, and seconds sales periodically offer bargains. Factory tours run on selected weekdays (book ahead) and let you watch the throwers, modellers, and painters at work. Even if you have no intention of buying anything, the museum gives an interesting hour in a town where the dominant story is the palace.
