The grid layout makes Mannheim unusually easy to navigate on foot. The central blocks are compact — the distance from the palace (A1) to the Wasserturm (F3) is about 1.5 km and takes 20 minutes at a comfortable pace. Most sights and restaurants are within this area.
Tram and bus services are run by RNV (Rhine-Neckar transport) and cover the city and surrounding region thoroughly. Trams are the main surface transport within the centre; U-Bahn lines extend into the suburbs. A day ticket covers unlimited travel and costs around €8. The same ticket works on services to Heidelberg and Ludwigshafen.
Cycling works well given the flat terrain. Several bike hire stations operate in the centre; the city has invested in dedicated cycle lanes along the main corridors.
To Heidelberg: The S-Bahn runs every 20 minutes and is the most reliable option. The journey takes 12–15 minutes and deposits you near the old town.
