The Ravensburger company has been making board games and puzzles in this city since 1883, and it has become part of the civic identity in a way that few commercial enterprises manage. The museum documents the company's history through its products — games and puzzles from different decades that double as a kind of social history of European childhood over the past 140 years.
The collection includes original game sets, early production equipment, and an interactive play area. Ravensburg also operates a larger theme park (Ravensburger Spieleland) about 20 kilometres south near Meckenbeuren, aimed primarily at families with young children. The museum in the city is smaller and more historically focused. Both are popular — the puzzle company remains one of Europe's best-known toy brands.
