Weingarten Abbey is one of the grandest Baroque churches in Germany, and standing in front of it you understand why. The basilica, built between 1715 and 1724 on a hilltop above the town, is enormous — longer than St Peter's in Rome when measured differently. The interior is lavishly frescoed by Cosmas Damian Asam and Franz Joseph Spiegler, and the Gabler Organ, built between 1735 and 1750 with over 6,600 pipes, is one of the finest surviving Baroque organs in the world.
The abbey is about 4 kilometres north of Ravensburg's old town, easily reached by bus or bicycle. The town of Weingarten itself is now practically contiguous with Ravensburg. Admission to the church is free; the monastery is still active (re-established in 1922) and organises guided tours.
