Wittichen Abbey

Wittichen Abbey is a former Poor Clares convent tucked into a narrow side valley of the Kleine Kinzig, about 8 kilometres north of Schiltach near the village of Schenkenzell. The setting is extremely quiet — a small whitewashed church, a handful of monastic buildings, and old farmland enclosed by forest on all sides.

The abbey was founded in 1324 and dissolved during the secularisation of 1806. Some of the original medieval fabric survives, including the church interior. Today the site is managed as a small memorial and cultural centre. It is reached by a pleasant drive or cycle through the Kleine Kinzig valley, and the road itself is worth the trip even if the abbey is closed.

A story
Wittichen Abbey was founded in 1324 by Luitgard von Wittichen, a noblewoman who reportedly experienced visions and chose this remote valley specifically for its isolation. The Poor Clares who settled here lived without any income-generating property — an unusually strict interpretation of Franciscan poverty that forced the community to rely entirely on charitable donations for its first century.
