The Fischerviertel is Ulm's medieval waterside quarter, where the channels of the River Blau join the Danube. Fishermen, tanners, and shipbuilders lived and worked here from the Middle Ages, and the neighbourhood preserves its character unusually well: half-timbered houses crowd the narrow lanes, some leaning over the water so far that upper stories on opposite sides nearly touch. The alley called Kussgasse (Kiss Alley) gets its name from exactly this quality.
The best approach is to follow the Blau upstream from the Danube embankment, passing the Crooked House and crossing small bridges over the mill channels. The old Watermen's Guildhouse, the Trout Inn, and the reconstructed Fisherman's Court are worth finding as you walk. Several small cafes and restaurants are tucked into the quarter; this is where Ulm is at its most medieval and most charming.
