The Solnhofen limestone quarries, in the hills south of the Altmühl river, are one of the most important geological sites in the world. The fine-grained Jurassic limestone — laid down in a tropical lagoon about 150 million years ago — has preserved fossils in exceptional detail, including intact feathers, soft tissue, and insects. The most famous find is Archaeopteryx, the transitional fossil between dinosaurs and birds.
The stone is still quarried here for high-quality lithographic and decorative purposes. The Bürgermeister-Müller-Museum in the village of Solnhofen displays the local fossil finds, including replica specimens of Archaeopteryx. It is small but genuinely fascinating and well worth a visit if you are cycling the valley route.
