The Altmühl Valley is cycling and hiking territory above all else. The Altmühltal Radweg (cycling path) runs for about 160 kilometres along the river from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim, passing through medieval towns, Roman ruins, and limestone gorges. The parallel hiking route covers the same terrain on foot. Beyond the trails, the valley has some specific draws: the Pappenheim castle, the Solnhofen quarries (source of the limestone that yielded Archaeopteryx), and the walled town of Berching are the highlights.
