St. Anne's Church

Former Carmelite monastery church where Martin Luther stayed in 1518

A former Carmelite monastery church in the northern Altstadt, notable for several reasons: it contains the Fuggerkapelle (Fugger Chapel, 1512), the first Renaissance chapel in Germany, commissioned as a private burial chapel by Jakob Fugger; it has a Goldschmied's Kapelle with remarkable late-Gothic carvings; and it is where Martin Luther stayed in 1518 during his confrontation with the papal authorities. The church is now a Lutheran parish church and is open to visitors. A small museum in the adjacent rooms covers Luther's Augsburg visit and the building's history.

A story
Martin Luther came to Augsburg in October 1518 to appear before Cardinal Cajetan, the papal legate, in an attempt to resolve the dispute over his 95 Theses. He stayed at St Anne's, then a Carmelite monastery, which had already been a centre of humanist scholarship. The meeting with Cajetan failed; Luther refused to recant and fled the city disguised as a monk. The Fuggerei chapel inside the church — the first Renaissance chapel in Germany — was commissioned by Jakob Fugger himself.
