St Bartholomä Church

St Bartholomä is a Baroque pilgrimage church on a small peninsula halfway down the Königssee, reachable only by boat. The building's distinctive red onion domes against a backdrop of sheer cliff and dark water is one of the most reproduced images in Bavarian tourism — and the reality lives up to the photograph. The peninsula was once the site of a Augustinian priory; the current church dates from around 1697.

The boat landing here allows passengers to disembark, explore the church and its small beer garden serving local trout, and reboard a later boat. The church itself is simple inside — a white single-nave interior with Baroque stucco work. The fishing rights on the Königssee are held by the Bavarian state hunting estate, and the smoked char sold at the church is genuinely good.
