Hedwigskapelle

Hedwigskapelle is one of the small rewards of walking the castle from end to end. It is not as dramatic as the towers or river views, but it adds a human scale to the fortress: a chapel tucked among walls, courtyards and former service buildings.

Step inside if it is open, then keep walking the ridge. Burghausen Castle works through accumulation, and small places like this prevent it from becoming just a very long wall.

A story
The chapel is named for St. Hedwig of Silesia, a reminder that Burghausen's rulers looked east as well as west. Medieval Bavaria's politics reached across today's neat borders, and this small chapel sits inside a fortress built to watch exactly those borderlands.
