Hofbräu Coburg

Coburg's Hofbräu brewery has been producing beer in the town since 1835, though the present setup is more pub than brewery tap — a wood-panelled Gaststätte in the old town that serves the house beers alongside the standard Franconian food. The Hofbräu Pils and the darker Dunkel are both well-made; the seasonal Märzen and Bock beers are worth seeking out if the timing is right.

The atmosphere is easy and unpretentious — local rather than touristy — and the garden at the back is pleasant in summer. Germans in this part of Franconia drink beer with the same seriousness they apply to the wine regions to the south, and the Hofbräu is a good place to sit for a couple of hours and observe that fact at close quarters.
