The Bräustüberl is the tap room of the Weihenstephan brewery, and it is the best argument for spending an evening in Freising rather than rushing back to Munich. The food is standard Bavarian — Schnitzel, Schweinsbraten, Weisswurst, pretzel — but very good of its kind, and the beer comes directly from the brewery a few metres away. The Hefeweissbier is exceptional; the Helles is reliable. The large terrace looks out over the Freising plain and is one of the more pleasant places to sit outside in Bavaria.
The Bräustüberl fills with locals, TU Munich students, and day-trippers from Munich in roughly equal measure. It has the easy, egalitarian atmosphere of a good beer hall without the tourist theatrics. Arrive by early evening to be sure of a table outside. Open daily from lunchtime. Reservations not usually necessary on weekdays.
