Connected directly to the cathedral via a cloister, the Diözesanmuseum Freising claims to be the largest diocesan museum in the world — a boast that is hard to verify but easy to believe after an hour inside. It houses an enormous collection of Bavarian religious art, from medieval panel paintings and carved altarpieces to Baroque goldsmith work, vestments, and carved ivory. The collection spans roughly a thousand years of Catholic devotion.
The highlights are concentrated in the medieval galleries: several large carved wooden figures, a remarkable triptych altarpiece from the 15th century, and a room dedicated to the cathedral's treasury. The Baroque section is larger but less gripping unless you have a specific interest. Allow at least an hour and a half. Closed Mondays.
