Maxplatz is the long, slightly sloping market square that forms the spine of Hof's old town. The Marienkirche sits at the southern end, the neo-Renaissance Rathaus a hundred metres up, and a line of three- and four-storey burghers' houses runs along both sides — some Baroque, some 19th century, a handful reconstructed after wartime damage.
The Wednesday and Saturday produce market is the best time to come: stalls of Franconian cheese, smoked sausage, Vogtland honey, and (in season) the famous local asparagus. Otherwise the square is quiet, with a couple of decent cafés and the year-round Wärschtlamo cart selling boiled bratwurst on rolls — the local snack.
