Audi Forum Ingolstadt

The Audi Forum is the global headquarters visitor centre for one of Germany's most successful car brands, and it is considerably more interesting than the typical corporate museum. The automobile museum at the heart of the complex contains more than 50 historic vehicles — early 20th-century Wanderer touring cars, pre-war DKW motorcycles, post-war Audi limousines, and the Le Mans-winning racing cars that dominated endurance racing in the 1980s.

Factory tours are available by pre-booking and take visitors through the current production line, where the A4, A5, and Q7 models are assembled. The experience gives a visceral sense of the scale and precision of modern automotive manufacturing. The Forum shop sells automotive merchandise and, somewhat incongruously, excellent coffee. The museum is about 2km from the old town centre; tram connections make it easy to reach.

A story
The Audi Forum sits on the site of the original NSU factory, which Audi acquired in 1969. The four rings of the Audi logo represent the merger of the four companies that formed Auto Union in 1932: Audi, DKW, Horch, and Wanderer. The museum traces this complicated corporate history through nearly a century of German automotive engineering, from brass-era tourers to Formula 1 racing cars.
