The Neues Schloss (New Castle) is one of the most important late-Gothic secular buildings in Bavaria, begun in 1418 and substantially complete by the 1430s. The four-winged castle with its distinctive towers sits at the northern edge of the old town, and its Gothic brick architecture is directly comparable to the great ducal palaces of the period.
Today the castle houses the Bayerisches Armeemuseum (Bavarian Army Museum), which documents Bavarian and German military history from the medieval period to the present. The collection includes armour, weapons, uniforms, and artillery — a large and serious military history collection. Whether or not military history interests you, the building itself is remarkable and the interior spaces give a good sense of 15th-century ducal living conditions. The castle grounds include a pleasant courtyard.
