At the pointed eastern tip of Passau's old town, the Inn and the Ilz flow into the Danube within metres of each other. The visual effect is striking: the Inn runs grey-green from its Alpine source, the Danube is a deeper blue, and the small Ilz runs dark brown from the peat moors to the north. The three colours swirl together and separate for several hundred metres downstream before finally mixing.
The Dreiflüsse-Eck itself is a small park with benches at the tip of the peninsula. It is busy with tourists in summer but remains a genuine spectacle. The best view of all three rivers in confluence is from above — from the Veste Oberhaus citadel on the hill — but the meeting point at water level is worth walking down to as well.
