Stiftskirche

The main church of Feuchtwangen, built in the 12th and 13th centuries on the site of a Benedictine monastery and reshaped repeatedly into the late Gothic period. The interior is a sober Romanesque-Gothic hall; the highlight is the magnificent late-Gothic carved altarpiece of 1484 by Michael Wolgemut, Albrecht Dürer's teacher and the most important Nuremberg painter of his generation.

The church is open daily and entry is free. The acoustics are good and concerts are held here in summer.

A story
The high altar of the Stiftskirche is the work of Michael Wolgemut, Albrecht Dürer's teacher in Nuremberg. It was completed in 1484, when the young Dürer was still an apprentice in the workshop — meaning he may well have had a hand in some of the painting on the wings.
