Sundial Trail

Open-air trail of 25 sundials scattered through the town

Röttingen calls itself a "Sundial Town" and has installed roughly 25 sundials around the streets, on house walls, and along the riverside. Together they make up a short walking trail that takes about an hour to complete and gives you an excuse to see every corner of the medieval centre.

Pick up the map at the tourist office in the Rathaus. Each sundial has a small plaque explaining its type and how to read it.

A story
In the 1990s the town set out to brand itself as Bavaria's 'sundial town' and commissioned local craftsmen and artists to install sundials of every conceivable type — vertical, horizontal, analemmatic, equatorial — on walls, in squares, and along the river. The trail now numbers around two dozen, each one a small puzzle in stone or metal that tells you the time if you know how to read it. It works best on a sunny afternoon, slowly, with the printed map.
