Steingaden's reputation is built on its churches — chiefly the rococo Wieskirche on the meadow east of the village and the older Premonstratensian Welfenmünster in the centre of town — but the surrounding alpine foothills also reward a slow morning's walk or a bicycle ride out toward the lakes south of Schongau.
