A waymarked five-kilometre path links the Welfenmünster in Steingaden to the Wieskirche, following the route taken by eighteenth-century pilgrims when the cult of the Scourged Christ first drew visitors out across the meadows. The path is mostly flat, passing through pine woods and open fields with views south to the Ammergau Alps.
Allow about an hour and a quarter each way. It is the most rewarding way to approach the Wieskirche — slowly, on foot, with the church revealing itself only at the end. Comfortable shoes, no special equipment.
