Lech Valley Cycling

Riverside cycling along the Lech through Alpine foothills villages

The Lech river below Schongau flows through a broad valley of meadows, gravel banks, and patches of riverine forest that make for excellent cycling. The Lechradweg — the Lech cycling route — runs for over 125 kilometres from the Forggensee reservoir near Füssen in the south to Augsburg in the north, and the Schongau section passes through some of the most attractive scenery. The surrounding landscape is classic Upper Bavarian — the Alps visible to the south, rolling hills and farmland in every direction, and a series of small towns with Baroque churches.

The valley here is relatively flat along the river, making cycling straightforward for most fitness levels. Bike hire is available in Schongau. A good day route goes south along the river to the Lechbruck reservoir and back, passing through several small villages and offering views of the Alps when the weather is clear.
