Schongau rewards a quiet morning or half-day of exploration. The medieval town walls and towers are the main draw — walk the full circuit, which takes under an hour, and stop at the Ballenhaus on the market square. The views from the bastions down to the Lech river are good, particularly in autumn. The Lech valley below is good cycling country, and the town sits on the Romantic Road cycling route.
