Peter Eisenman's field of 2,711 dark grey concrete stelae, each a different height, spread across five acres just south of the Brandenburg Gate on the former edge of the death strip. The slabs range from ankle height at the edges to well over two metres in the centre, where the ground slopes away and the narrow passages between them produce an unsettling, disorienting effect. There is no explicit explanation within the field itself; the visitor is left to find their own response.
Below the memorial, the information centre (free, requires separate ticket) documents the Holocaust with individual testimonies and records of the systematic destruction of Europe's Jewish communities. The combination of the abstract field above and the documentary evidence below is one of the most powerful memorial experiences in Germany. Open daily; the field itself is always accessible.
