An unexpected piece of grandeur in scruffy Neukölln: a formal sunken garden laid out between 1912 and 1916 on the site of a former gravel pit, with a cascading fountain, balustraded terraces, and an orangery along one side. The four-metre drop below street level shuts out the surrounding traffic and gives it the feel of a private estate.
The orangery houses a café and the Galerie im Körnerpark, which puts on free contemporary-art exhibitions, and in summer the park hosts a programme of open-air concerts. It is a quiet, slightly surreal spot — manicured French formality dropped into one of the city's most working-class districts.
