Spandau Citadel is one of Berlin's major surviving fortresses, built between 1560 and 1590 on the site of an older castle. Its Juliusturm later became associated with Germany's reserve of indemnity gold after the Franco-Prussian War.
The citadel is both a historic site and a museum complex, with exhibitions on Spandau's history, public monuments in Berlin, and artillery. It is a worthwhile trip west of the centre for visitors interested in military architecture and layered local history.
