The Peter and Paul Church in the Bassinplatz is a large neo-Romanesque Catholic church completed in 1870 — an unusual sight in solidly Protestant Prussia, built for the growing Catholic population of 19th-century Potsdam. The exterior is dignified if conventional; the interior is more interesting, with mosaic decorations and stained glass that give it a warmer atmosphere than the neoclassical Protestant churches nearby.
The church faces the Bassinplatz, a large square at the eastern edge of the Dutch Quarter, which serves as a local market and gathering point. The plaza and the streets around it have become one of the more lively parts of the old town, with cafes and a regular farmers' market. The church tower offers occasional climbing access with views over the old town.
