The Westend is the genteel, leafy district immediately north-west of the city centre, between the Alte Oper and the university. Its big late-19th-century villas, set back behind front gardens on quiet streets like Beethovenstrasse and Schubertstrasse, were built for the bankers and Jewish merchants of imperial Frankfurt, and many of them now house consulates, law firms and small private museums. The Palmengarten, Frankfurt's botanical garden, occupies the western edge of the district.
Westend is also the heart of academic Frankfurt — the Goethe University's main campus is here, including the imposing IG Farben Building (now the Westend campus), the curved-line modernist headquarters built in 1930 for the IG Farben chemical conglomerate and infamously commandeered by the SS and later the US Army. Walk the Bockenheimer Landstrasse for the best feel of the district's mixture of old wealth, students and quiet commerce.
