Frankfurt has a wealth of gastronomic possibilities, from trendy bars to the cheap Italian restaurants of Bockenheim, the working-class and student quarter. Local specialties such as Ebbelwoi (apple wine) and Handkäs mit Musik (cheese with vinegar sauce) are found on every corner.
The main area for cheap food is between Rathenauplatze and Opernplatz, just north of the centre. The Grosse Bockenheimerstrasse and Kalbächerstrasse are locally known as the Fressgasse -- the "munching alley". Near Zeil and Römerberg there are also good places, as well as in Bockenheim.
