The Botanischer Garten der Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen is a four-hectare garden dating to 1609, maintained by the university as both a research facility and a public garden. It holds a substantial collection of plants arranged by taxonomic family, geography, and ecological habitat, including greenhouse sections for tropical and subtropical species.
The garden sits on the western edge of the university campus, a short walk from the city centre. It is a good place to spend a quiet afternoon, particularly in spring when the collections are at their most colourful. Admission is free, though the greenhouses have their own visiting hours. The combination of scientific rigour and genuine beauty makes it more interesting than most university botanical gardens.
